Sole proprietorships are businesses formed by one individual whose personal and business assets are not separated the owner is responsible for all business debts. An LLC separates personal and business assets this makes the business owner not personally liable for the debts of the business. It would be advantageous to consult an accountant while drumherum up your b usiness if you do not have previous experience with the process. Consider Insurance Insurance is available for pet sitters. Get the Word Out Design a flyer and business card to place on entryway bulletin boards in vet clinics, supermarkets, dog groomers, and pet stores. Leave several business cards or flyers if possible so potential clients will feel free to take one with them for future reference. You can also place ads on Craigslist, in church bulletins, and in neighborhood newsletters. Consider having your contact information and logo made into large magnets to schirm on your vehicle. Create a website with a personalized domain name and detailed i nformation about the services you provide. You can also advertise while you work by wearing clothing customized with your business logo and phone number. Word of mouth will generate much of your business. When clients come to you, make a note of where they heard about your service (referral from a friend, website, flyer), so you will know what areas to focus on. Keep Detailed Records For each owner who uses your pet sitting service, maintain a contact sheet that includes their address, phone number, email, and emergency contact numbers. Be sure to record complete information on each pet including breed, color, date of birth, health history (allergies, previous injuries), veterinarians name and clinic contact information. For repeat clients, make sure to ask if there are any updates or changes to what you have on file for the pet. You should also include a daily care sheet for the owners to fill out. It should detail the pets feeding, medication, and exercise schedules. Make sure to leave a space for any special instructions. A basic veterinary release form will allow you to take the pet to the vet with the owner agreeing to pay any resulting bills. It is very important to discuss a veterinary contingency plan with the owners prior to their departure, as they may be unreachable at their vacation destination. Make sure everything is in writing. Pricing and Services Most pet sitters charge for their services based on numberof visits required per day. Additional options such as grooming, obedience training, or pooper scooper service may also be offered for a fee. House sitting services such as watering plants and collecting mail may also be negotiated for a fee or offered free as an extra perk of using your service. The best way to get a feel for pricing is to check out the local competition to see what the going rate is for pet sitting services in your area. You should also call vet clinics and boarding facilities to see what they charge. Owners often pre fer to keep their pet in a familiar home environment rather than expose them to the more stressful boarding situation. If your costs are competitive, you should have an edge with in-home service. Obtain a Signed Contract Terms of service agreements spell out in detail the relationship between the client (pet owner) and service provider (you). It is the place to outline exactly what your service offers, pricing, payment options, cancellation policies, damages, veterinary situations, etc. Make sure you have a signature before you begin work for a new client. Start Working Always remember, word of mouth is your best advertisement. Doing a great job for one client can lead to a dozen referrals.

What I Wish I Knew When I Graduated College

What I Wish I Knew When I Graduated CollegeWhat I Wish I Knew When I Graduated CollegeThis spring, colleges around the country are holding commencement ceremonies- the official process of pushing young adults out of the educational nest and into the real world.I remember this stage of life vividly, and cant think of a more startlingly disruptive rite of passage. When I transitioned from a full-time student to a full-time employee, I felt my entire identity morph into something new. From the clothes I bought to my bedtime, everything changed, and it welchesnt always pretty.Like they say, hindsights 20/20, and its easy to reflect back on what I couldve done differently that would have made this change less stressful. And while I cant time travel back to being 22, I can share what I learned with you. Heres a list of a few things I wish Id known when I graduated college and first started working.1. You Have to Grow UpWhen I started my first job, I had a lot of friends who were still in s chool, and I struggled to balance my work persona with my former student identity. I wanted the best of both worlds to stay up late and party, and to still be able to wake up and perform at the office. After a few months I realized, begrudgingly, that this wasnt going to work. Being prepared, attentive, and engaged at 8 AM, five days a week is simply not possible with a hangover (or even without a good breakfast). So, amid chiding from my still-in-school peers, I started taking small steps toward more adult behaviors- like getting enough sleep and eating food other than pizza- which made it much easier to be on my game at work. The biggest lesson here was that I didnt have to totally change who I was overnight when I started working, but I did need to prioritize a little more. Gradual changes made this totally manageable, and within a few months I felt much more comfortable juggling my personal and professional obligations.2. There are No Gold StarsWhen I was in college, my grades ever y semester told me exactly how I was doing in different areas. I liked getting regular feedback and knowing exactly what I had to do to be successful. But this all changed when I started working. No longer was I recognized for every achievement, nor was I evaluated by a simple, consistent system like letter grades. Extra credit? Forget about it. When I entered the workforce, I was working on all kinds of projects and tasks, at different paces, for various bosses. There was no clear path to success, and I realized that I was now responsible for paving my own way. This was a bit of a rude awakening, but one that pushed me to grow dramatically. It also made me realize how important it is to have professional mentors. No, they didnt give me a grade every semester, but they did provide advice, guidance, and feedback when things got especially challenging.3. Friends in Low PlacesIn college, I spent 99% of my time with my friends, roommates, and sorority sisters. I could choose who I wanted to hang out with, eat meals with, and socialize with almost all the time. But when I started working, I was spending 40-50 hours per week with a lot of new people- and shockingly, I didnt connect with, or even like, all of them. This was tough. But I soon learned that just because the people I worked with werent exactly like my typical friends, they could still be awesome to hang around- and I could learn a lot from them. I started accepting the occasional offer to attend a happy hour or birthday lunch, and over time, I started to fit in with my surroundings.Just as with family, we dont generally get to pick who we end up with as co-workers. But, with a little work and an open mind, youll be surprised at how easy can be to build meaningful relationships at work.4. When the Going Gets Tough, Life Still Goes OnSimply put, life gets a lot harder after college, and at the risk of sounding melodramatic, things never seems quite as carefree as you grow older. But no matter how rough things seem at first, a lot of cool stuff comes along with being forced to grow up (and not just cheaper car insurance). In plus-rechnen to greater financial independence, the opportunity to be pushed and exposed to all new things is exciting. Youll meet new people, try new things, enjoy life outside your comfort zone, and change and grow as a person.Looking back, if I had known how much my life would change and all the obstacles Id face after college, I probably wouldve packed up and moved to a remote island to avoid it all. Fortunately, I lacked a crystal ball, so I entered the workforce with rose-colored glasses and fancy new suits. But despite all the ways I could have prepared and planned for my future, I think that the youthful optimism I had as a new grad was really all I needed.New grads, remember Its not going to be easy, but its going to be awesome. And one day, youll look back on all of the craziness, and youll yearn to do it all over again.Photo courtesy of Steven Depolo.

Learn How to Research Prospective Employers

Learn How to Research Prospective EmployersLearn How to Research Prospective EmployersKnowledge is power. All the big companies know that and pour lots of money into research to gain the knowledge they need to be competitive. Companies commit extensive resources to conducting market research before selling their products. Many large companies have huge information centers where they employ staffs of professional librarians who can access information on clients, competitors, and customers. Take note. The amount of knowledge you have about a potential employer, and on the industry in which you hope to work, can give you a competitive edge. It pertains both to making initial contact with employers and before going on interviews. In addition, having information on a company is also invaluable when it comes to evaluating a job offer. Research Before Making Initial Contact When you begin to make initial contacts with potential employers, through resumes or any other method you use, it is a good idea to have some basic facts about the company. You dont need to do exhaustive research at this point- there is plenty of time for that later. However, you should know the companys industry, what they do, which some major clients are, and the names of some of the companys higher-ups, i.e., CEO, President, etc. You should also know who is in charge of hiring for the position you are seeking. Research Before the Interview Before going on an interview is the time to do extensive research. Being armed with an arsenal of information can give you an edge over your competition, as you will be able to answer questions about the employer should you be asked any in the interview. It is not unusual to be asked the question, What do you know about us? It will also enable you to ask intelligent questions when you are given the opportunity as job candidates usually are toward the end of the interview. Just as researching clients gives corporations the ability to individually targe t sales presentations, knowing your potential employer will help you target your presentation to them. Research Before Accepting a Job Offer Knowing the financial standing of a company can help you decide whether to make a commitment to that company. If a company is on shaky financial ground, you must evaluate whether you want to stake your future there. By keeping up with business nachrichtensendung, you can learn about a companys financial well-being. Securities and Exchange Commission Documents The primary source of information about many companies isUS Security and Exchange Commission(SEC) documents. The SEC is a federal agency that oversees securities markets to protect investors. Most companies that have outside shareholders with a financial interest in it- known as publicly-held companies- must make their financial information available to the public. They do this by filing certain documents with the SEC. Not every company with shareholders is required to disclose their f inancial information, however. A company must file documents with the SEC if its securities are traded in interstate commerce, the company has more than one million dollars in assets, and/or there is a class of equity security held by 500 or more shareholders. Those companies that are required to disclose financial information do so by filing documents including annual reports, Form 10-Ks and Form 10-Qs. These filings are available online through theEDGAR Database. Of these aforementioned documents, the one familiar to most people is theannual report. The annual report, which must also be sent to each shareholder, contains financial information about a company as well as other points of interest. Most companies post their annual reports on their websites, or you can obtain a copy by calling their investor relations departments. A no-frills version of an annual report is the Form 10-K. It contains the saatkorn information that is required in the annual report. A company isnt required to file a Form 10-K until three months after the end of its fiscal year. Since quite a bit of time can pass between when a corporation files an annual report or Form 10-K and when you are looking for information, you should also look at its Form 10-Q. That is a quarterly report that bridges the gap between annual filings. Corporate WebsitesCorporate websites have a ton of information on them. It is very likely that the company you are researching has one and it should be the first distributions-mix you turn to when doing your research. These sites often list job openings as well. You can use a search engine to locate a companys Web site. Social MediaMany companies- and the number is growing- use social media to announce news to the public. Make sure to follow them on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and any other social media sites on which they have a presence. Press ReleasesLike an annual report, press releases present information in a way that appeals to the media, and in turn to the consumer. They are generally written by professionals who know how to make even the most damaging news somewhat palatable. When you need to find out newsworthy information about a company, they are a good source. Just remember to look out for the positive spin. You can search for press releases onPRWeb.com. DirectoriesDirectories are another source for locating information on both privately and publicly-held companies. Since information on publicly-held companies is more readily available, you will find more of these companies listed in directories. However, some privately held companies are willing to disclose information about themselves. Your local library should have business directories, some of which may be available online on the library website. Business News You should also make use of media outlets that report onbusiness news. This source comes in handy when looking for something that the company may not necessarily want the public to know, and you can als o get a more balanced presentation than from a press release. Local NewspapersLocal newspapers usually publish articles about companies in their city or town. It is often the only place you will find information on small, local companies. National NewspapersWhile theNew York Timesis not planning to change its name to theUS Times, it can serve as a source of national information. The same can be said of other newspapers across the country likeThe Boston Globe,The Chicago Tribune, andThe Washington Post, to name only a few. Articles on larger US and international companies are featured in the pages of these publications. If something newsworthy happens, you will probably find it in any large newspaper. Most are also available online. Business JournalsBusiness Journals are an excellent source of information as well. The most well known isThe Wall Street Journal. There are also smaller, more local business journals. You can find information on local companies as well as companies with a wider geographic scope. These journals provide a good way of tracking who has moved where, what companies have what clients, and which companies are relocating to your area. Openings of new businesses should also be announced in a business journal. Industry JournalsThese publications follow companies within different industries. If you are looking for employment opportunities within a specific industry, this is a great way to become more knowledgeable about the industry in general. You can look at trends and upcoming changes to determine how you can best make an impact. Remember, you are trying to show potential employers what you can do for them. Professional JournalsThese journals keep you apprised of goings on in your field. They also contain advice about how to do your job better. Being able to discuss new medical billing software with the office manager of a doctors office will show your level of expertise and interest in the field.

Congratulations Now its time to start preparing for Generation Z in the workplace.Dont think that the two generations are one and the same. A survey by Randstad found that while 46 percent of millennials would prefer to work in a corporate environment, only 16 percent of Gen Z would. Before you throw your hands up in the air at the thought of catering your recruiting to yet anotlageher generation, remember we still have a few years before Gen Z graduates college. But fortune favors the prepared. Here are some expert tips on how you can start getting ready now for Generation Z in the workplace1. Start experimenting now.Personalization is getting easier with technology, so use that to your advantage. Communicate what your company can offer to older workers and younger workers, and then target them strategically. For example, maybe older workers are more likely to be on Linkedin and y ounger more likely to be on Instagram. You cant change your recruitment strategy overnight, and there will be so much testing involved that it makes sense to start now so that youre more prepared than your competitors. They are not impressed with meeting Bob from accounting who has been with the company for 20 years, as the majority of Generation Z cannot relate to this concept of staying with one company for so long. A more progressive-thinking work environment with the ability to have a work/life balance is what they want. Generation Z wants to start their work career, but is not ready to give up their personal life/beliefs in order to do that.Employers should have other Generation Z employees be a part of the interview so the Generation Z candidate will have someone they can relate to during this interview process, which will help make them more comfortable with the idea of employment at the company. Also, having an internship or co-op program will attract Generation Z candidates to your workplace giving the employer the opportunity to hang on to these candidates after they officially graduate. Embrace their independence.Gen Z has the potential to become the most independent generation ever seen. Growing up, almost any question they had could be immediately answered using Google, reading advice columns, and watching do-it-yourself projects. As a result, Gen Z will differentiate from other generations seeking entrepreneurship, independence, and purpose when looking for employers. Part of this independence will be seeking employers who offer flexible work schedules and virtual teams. In addition, this sense of independence will cause Gen Z to look for organizations that give them the chance to voice their opinions and the chance to move up the ladder quickly. Bryan Yackulic, Assistant Director of the Chartered Leadership Fellow, The American College of Financial ServicesTech has made GenZ more independent. Embrace that if you want to recruit them. MillennialstatsClick To Tweet5. Understand how they select their roles in an organization.Stability is not Gen Zs first reason for applying and staying in a role, unlike previous generations. They are looking for roles that they can create around themselves, rather than them fitting into a role.Gen X and Baby Boomers have experienced the change in the workplace when Gen Y entered the workforce, undoubtedly Gen Z will make th eir mark and will select roles that they want. Employers will have to be quick to choose the best and be the best, so as to retain them. Select the candidate who has the personality then the ability, except of course where a certain skill is required. How to write a cover letter when changing career

How to write a cover letter when changing career How to write a cover letter when changing career Writing a cover letter is challenging at the best of times, and even more so if you’re in the process of making a big career change. Although you know why you want to make this change, persuading the HR team to give you a chance is something else. You will really need to pull out all the stops in your cover letter, but if it’s something you want, then it will definitely be worth it. We’re behind you, every step of the way, and we’ve got some tips for creating the perfect cover letter to help you make that all important career change.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The cover letterWriting a convincing cover letter takes a lot of time, energy and soul-searching. When it comes to making a career change, you need it as your one big chance to present yourself and the reasons why you want to switch up your career. The better you explain your reasoning, the more likely it is that the HR team will offer you a chance. There are a couple of ways to do this, starting with the opening lines.Start your letter with a bangYou need to start with a bang! Instead of opening your cover letter in a generic way, by saying that you’re undoubtedly the best person for the job because of xyz reasons, think of a more explosive/fun way to grab the HR manager’s attention.Put yourself in the HR team’s shoes. What would you like to know about a surprise applicant and what would make you stop and take the time to read their cover letter? Maybe you have a story about the moment you realized that you wanted to pursue this new career, or you have a quote that sums up you or your decision-making? This is your chance to impress, so go for it!Take center stageAfter you’ve made a great first impression with your opening lines, it’s time for you to take center stage and make the next part all about you (just make it short and sweet). This is your chance to introduce yours elf, your motivations and your ambitions for this new role. Take a look at our article about  giving yourself an edge  to help you with this.Focus on the skills you already haveWhat’s your superpower? Are you super organized, a great motivator or an experienced salesperson? Here, you want to emphasize the skills and/or experience you already have that you will bring to your new role. Also, think outside the box. If you think you’ve learnt specific and important lessons or skills in your former job that don’t immediately translate into the new one, tell the HR manager why you think these are important and how they make you an attractive candidate for this job.Be honestNow’s your chance to share the story behind the career change. Was there a moment when you suddenly realized you were in the wrong job? Were you encouraged to make the move by a friend or family member? Did you always dream of this career but never felt confident enough to take the plunge? Have your priorities c hanged now that you have a family? Whatever your story is, you can bet that the HR team will want to know. Just write this part from the heart.Focus on the positivesSince you’re making a career change, there’s likely to be a few skills you don’t have yet. Whatever you do, make sure that you don’t apologize for this. Turn it into a positive as much as possible by telling the HR team how eager and excited you are to learn new skills. Find out more about how to do this,  here.Make a big closing argumentTo wrap your letter up, use the last couple of sentences to state your closing arguments. Quickly summarize what you’ve said so far and give the HR manager 2-3 big reasons why they should hire you or at least offer you an interview. This article first appeared on Kununu.    You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people (

7 Lessons to Learn from Job Loss

7 Lessons to Learn from Job Loss 7 Lessons to Learn from Job Loss Losing a job ranks pretty low on things people want to experience. It happens, though, for a variety of reasons and can happen without much notice. So, how do you recover from job loss and move on in your career? By evaluating the things that can be done differently and focusing on the opportunities you have ahead of you. Job loss, whether from being fired or being laid off, can come as a shock, and the first few days can easily be consumed with stress and anger. However, the loss could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe you’ve hated your job for as long as you’ve had it. Maybe you felt you weren’t being given the opportunity to apply your skills. Perhaps it was a dead-end career with no growth. No matter the reason, there is a silver lining to having the opportunity to focus on new career opportunities. Rather than dwell on the circumstances that can’t be controlled, put your best foot forward and use the list below to take stock of the lessons you can learn from job loss. Here are seven lessons to learn from job loss: 1. Evaluate what needs to be done differently. Nobody likes to let their shortcomings hang around, but evaluating areas you could improve can help you in developing the skills you need to be a better staffer. Were you ever given critical feedback? If so, use that to become a stronger, more experienced professional. 2.  Find your right fit. Sure, you might have liked your job enough, and the pay was perfect for your lifestyle. What about finding a job you love? Or a company where  you feel passionate about the mission? Or, what about a job with a higher salary? Job loss can create an opportunity for you to do something different, earn a higher salary, and finally, find that work-life balance you’ve been desperately chasing. 3. Be mindful of internal company happenings. If you didn’t see the loss of your job coming, it might be time to learn to be more mindful of internal company happenings. In many instances, layoffs or force reductions are quietly discussed and visible within a company. However, if this sort of behavior makes you feel a bit grossed out and icky, use this in your job search. Evaluate a company’s culture and ask about its  transparency. 4. Prove yourself to be valuable. Although being a high performer won’t necessarily save you from a force reduction, it can help keep you in a more positive light when the times comes. That could mean anything from a good recommendation, assistance in sourcing new opportunities, or advanced notice that things are going south. When you make yourself valuable and learn to raise your hand at work, people notice you and build relationships with you. 5.  Build a network. Job loss can happen suddenly, which means a job search has to begin almost immediately. Having a strong network available can help to ease the transition from one job to another. A network is also a great place to gather information, which could help you spot potential issues with a company. 6. Use the right lingo. Once you start your job search, you’ll be asked why you left your previous position. Rather than use common terms such as “fired” or “laid off,” focus on terms explaining a force reduction or position elimination. While this won’t save you from a full-on verbal explanation at some point, it will show your job loss in a better light. 7. Stay positive and move on. When you lose a job, the last thing you typically feel is positive. Well, unless you hated your job. Then, you might feel a bit of relief. However, as you move into your job search, keep yourself positive. Don’t hold onto the anger, and don’t bad talk your previous employer during your search. Try to accept it for what it is and move on. In the market  for a flexible job? Check out the  latest listings here! Readers, have you experienced job loss? dont list basic computer skills on a resume

dont list basic computer skills on a resume dont list basic computer skills on a resume A reader writes: Is it really necessary to list computer skills on a resume? Shouldnt basic skills be assumed at this point in history? Im great with Microsoft Office and I know Macs and a couple of other miscellaneous programs, but I dont know Photoshop or Dreamweaver or HTML or anything specialized. And my most recent position is Administrative Assistant, so isnt computer use implied in the title? Can I save that space for something a little more, I dont know, stand-outish? Yes, yes, yes! I totally agree. There is no need to list basic computer skills, like Word, Excel, or Outlook, on a resume. If you have specialized computer skills in a program that isnt being used by everyone in any office in the U.S. list those. Or if youre known for something really amazing in these basic programs, you could put that like became office Excel guru and trouble-shot all complicated Excel functions. But otherwise, skip any mention of computer skills; theres no reason to use up valuable resume real estate with it. Frankly, in my dream world, candidates would instead list the expected skills that they DONT have like: warning: Ive never used a word processing program, and I dont know how to attach a file to an email, nor am I likely to pick it up easily.

Crying during this specific time of day can help you lose weight

Crying during this specific time of day can help you lose weight Crying during this specific time of day can help you lose weight Recently, Ladders weighed in on the “Is it okay to cry at work? debate.   After examining a roundup of expert opinions on the subject, we ultimately decided that crying is a cathartic and physiologically beneficial activity, wherever it’s done, even if doing so at your place of work rarely, if ever, advertises a stable and capable employee. The psychological benefits of crying are well documented. In addition to helping us fight bacteria, release toxins and reduce stress, setting aside some time for a little evening sob can actually help you shed pounds. This fascinating new find comes on behalf of Dr. Aaron Neufeld of the Los Altos Optometric group. Neufeld posits that emotional crying, informed by individual feelings specifically, promotes weight loss by stopping the production of hormones associated with fat storage.  The   different tiers of tearsIt all has to do with a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is produced in the adrenal glands and is the body’s main stress hormone . Although cortisol is most often associated with our flight or fight response, it plays a huge role in helping us maintain a healthy weight. When we suppress our emotions, the hormone is induced, surging our cravings for fat, sugary foods. Crying, specifically, the production of psychic tears releases toxins that would otherwise heighten cortisol production.  Basal tears, or “basic function tears,” are purposed to keep our eyes moist and reflex tears or “irritation tears” are induced by environmental factors, like smoke or chopped onions. Neither have any bearing on well-being or the reduction of fat. Psychic tears, which are triggered by emotional unrest, prohibit our body from storing additional fat by hindering the production of certain hormones, namely cortisol. The doctor behind the study published in Asiaone went so far as to recommend we ruminate over failed relationships, and watch sad movies between the hours of 7 and 9 pm, to receive optimal fat reducing crying eff ects.

10 Worst Resumes Ever Created in the Whole Galaxy

10 Worst Resumes Ever Created in the Whole Galaxy 10 Worst Resumes Ever Created in the Whole Galaxy Have you ever caught yourself thinking: “Oh God, my resume is terrible?” Good news! It almost certainly wasn’t. If there’s one thing the worst resumes ever can teach you, it’s that creating a horrendous resume usually takes a deliberate effort. It simply has to. Because if not, how else would you explain RICKY SANTANGELO? But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Obviously, some of the resumes below were created in a sincere effort to stand out from other candidates. Ultimately, standing out is good. You want employers to remember you. But you should always aim to make them remember you in a positive light- not just any light. After all, each one of these resumes is memorable. Recruiters surely remember them at nights when they wake up screaming in a cold sweat. Then they recall how none of these people got the job in the end and that comforts them. You should always aim to make employers remember you in a positive light- not just any light. So if you ever think of giving your cover letter a Harry Potter-like visual, think again. If you ever consider inventing a blowjob machine, do it in your spare time! And if your name is RICKY SANTANGELO, stop being RICKY SANTANGELO. Most of all, remember that being fun, quirky, or interesting is not an asset in most professions (I know, it’s harsh). In most cases, employers are simply looking for someone normal who get’s the job done. They don’t want a clown. Remember this the next time youll think of spicing up your resume with something truly extraordinary. In the meantime, enjoy the quirkiness of the resumes below. Celebrating the wins of 2018 before 2019 begins

Celebrating the wins of 2018 before 2019 begins Celebrating the wins of 2018 before 2019 begins It’s almost the end of 2018! I honestly can’t believe how quickly the year flew by. Something I’ve been doing for the past couple of years is stopping to reflect on the past year so that I can celebrate my wins, big and small. It’s important to acknowledge and celebrate our accomplishments so that we don’t forget about them. It’s easy to focus on what we didn’t achieve (and the New Years Resolutions we abandoned), but it’s a little harder to call out what we  did  do. Taking the time to reflect like this might surprise you. You may have achieved more than you thought you did.Give yourself this chance to be proud of yourself so you’re motivated to set new goals for 2019.I’ve created a  worksheet  to help you do just that on your own!Make a Long ListSit down and make a list of everything you accomplished this year. It can be something as big as running a marathon and something as small as getting your annual physical. Anything that made you happy and moved you forwar d in life is considered a win. You might have to wrack your brain a little, but it will feel good to go through this exercise.Identify Where Things Fell ShortWhile it’s imperative to celebrate your accomplishments, it’s also important to learn from your mistakes or failings. Were there things you set out to do in 2018 that never happened? Why didn’t they happen? Perhaps you need to set the same goal for 2018, or perhaps that goal isn’t something you’re really willing or able to meet. Getting clear on  why  you weren’t able to achieve something is key to moving forward.Treat YourselfAllow yourself to treat yourself for everything you accomplished in 2018. It can be something very small, but do something nice for yourself. I think the “treat yourself” movement has gotten slightly out of hand, but it’s also good to reward yourself for good behavior and meeting goals. Make sure the treat still fits within your budget, though!Set Goals for 2019Use your 2018 wins to info rm your goals for 2019. Do you want to build on your successes from this year? Do you want to take things in a different direction? What Will Keep You Motivated?Figure out what will keep you motivated as the year goes on. The New Year shine wears off fast! Is it keeping your goals list printed and taped up on the wall where you can see it? It is setting a weekly check-in with yourself to see how you’re doing? Is it designating an accountability buddy who will keep you on track? Decide what the best approach is for you so that you keep moving forward! My 2018 Wins:Since I want you to go through this exercise, I need to walk the walk! I filled out the worksheet myself, but here are the wins that really stand out.I Took My Business Full-TimeOn January 1, 2018, I was officially a full-time business owner, having left my day job at the end of December. It was a terrifying leap, but one that I felt that I had to take. There have certainly been ups and downs throughout the year, but I donâ €™t regret the move. I’ve learned a lot about myself and my business, and I know that big changes are coming in 2019, too.I Got ICF CertifiedLast year, I received my first coaching certification through  CoachDiversity Institute. This year, I took the next step of getting certified by the  International Coach Federation, as they are viewed as the authority on coaching certification. I am now both a Certified Professional Diversity Coach and an Associate Certified Coach.I Ran an Airbnb RentalWhen Dan and I were looking to buy a house last year, one of my big priorities was to find a house with a basement that we could rent out. I knew we could afford our mortgage ourselves, but I also wanted to have a potential extra income source. We got lucky and found a house with a finished basement and its own entrance. Since we finished fixing it up in February, we’ve been running it as an Airbnb rental. It’s actually been really successful! We get guests from all over the world, either t o visit the University of Maryland or DC. Next year, our county will be implementing some limitations to how often we can rent out the space during the year, but I’m still optimistic about the extra income it will bring.I Went to the Dominican Republic with My FamilyI didn’t have to actually do anything special for this to happen. My grandmother paid for our entire family to spend a week in the Dominican Republic at an all-inclusive resort. The only money Dan and I had to spend was on tipping all of the wonderful resort staff. But it was a great privilege to be able to spend a week relaxing with my immediate and extended family.I Had My First Big Paid Speaking GigIn June, I spoke on a financial literacy panel at the  NCCWSL  at University of Maryland. It just so happened that the director of the Women’s Leadership Mentorship Program at  Robert Morris University  was in the audience. She liked what I had to say, so she brought me to Pittsburgh to speak at her program’s orien tation. It was my first well-paid speaking gig, and they also covered travel costs! It inspired me to prioritize  speaking  as part of my business model, and I’m excited to see what 2019 brings. My Business Won An AwardI won the Women Empowerment Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the  DC Women’s Business Center  this year! I nominated myself, but had no expectations of winning. It was a great surprise to be chosen for the award! I was also a finalist for the  Women’s Information Network’s  Entrepreneurship for Good award in December.I Hired a Financial PlannerI may be a financial coach, but I’m not a certified financial planner, so I wanted to get a little extra help managing my money. Especially after this year, when I took a pay cut by quitting my job, I wanted to make sure Dan and I were staying on the right track financially. We hired my friend, Jessie Hill, to advise us on our retirement savings, and also to buy life insurance. You’re better off locking in life ins urance when you’re young and healthy, so we wanted to get on top of that now.My Business Made a ProfitThey say that most businesses don’t make a profit within the first year. I’ve been running my business for almost 3 years, but this is the first year that it’s full-time. I certainly didn’t make as much as I would like to (I want to replace my old salary and then some), but I made a profit, even after all of my expenses. I’ll call that a win!I Got MarriedYou may have noticed, based on my wedding-heavy content, that I got married this year! As you also may have noticed, I didn’t love the planning process, so I’m glad to finally be married. The wedding itself was beautiful and it was wonderful to have most of the people we love all in one place.I Went to ThailandBefore my honeymoon, I had never actually traveled to Asia. I’d heard wonderful things about Thailand for years and always wanted to make the trip. Dan and I decided to take the leap and go to Thailand for ne arly 3 weeks for our honeymoon. It was an amazing experience that was unlike any other vacation I’ve taken. It forced me to get out of my comfort zone in many ways, whether it was the language, the food, or the transportation.

How to Find the Best Workplace for Your Payroll Career

How to Find the Best Workplace for Your Payroll Career How to Find the Best Workplace for Your Payroll Career Finding a new payroll job is not unlike dating. To make the relationship work, you and your new company should be well matched in areas such as style and personality. Whether you’re an active or passive job candidate, here are seven factors to look for when assessing potential employers and planning your next steps in your payroll career: 1. An engaged communication style If you’ve ever worked for a company where information seldom trickles down to the staff level, you understand how frustrating a poor or nonexistent communication style can be. When evaluating potential workplaces for your payroll career, note how responsive they are to your messages. Do you have to wait days or weeks to hear back, or do your emails and phone calls get returned within a few hours? How’s their tone - curt and hurried, or friendly and respectful? An organization’s poor communication style can lead to low morale among staff and a high turnover rate. 2. A good work-life balance To attract top talent, companies are offering an assortment of perks that encourage employees to take care of themselves and spend more time with their families. And that makes perfect sense: The happier workers are, the more productive, creative and loyal they’re likely to be. As you research potential workplaces, take a good look at their job postings and website. Are they proud of their generous vacation policy and flexible scheduling? During the interview, ask hiring managers how the company prioritizes work-life balance and whether it has policies such as telecommuting and flextime. 3. The right opportunities You want to be part of an organization that will invest in your future as a payroll professional. When speaking with hiring managers, ask what they offer in terms of professional training. Do they help pay for certification exams and payroll association fees? Will they allow you to take continuing professional education (CPE) courses on company time? Do they provide mentoring opportunities for your payroll career? Employers that value their workers typically put strong emphasis on professional development. 4. A suitable city Sometimes landing a top payroll job requires moving to another area. Finding the right city depends on your priorities. To help you weigh your options, Robert Half has put together a list of 25 U.S. major cities to compare career prospects - ranked by factors such as career prospects, quality of life, cost of living and cultural diversity. If you’re in a position to relocate, doing so could give your professional and personal life a boost. 5. A compatible culture Do you like fast-paced and challenging assignments, or do you prefer predictable and steady work? Is your preference to hang out after hours with colleagues, or are you more comfortable with well-defined professional boundaries? The best workplace is the one where you can feel at home each day, and where you’re a respected part of the team. 6. Similar values Robert Half’s recent study - IT’S TIME WE ALL WORK HAPPY ® - finds that organizational pride is one of the most powerful drivers of job satisfaction. People feel good about their role when they believe in what their employer is doing, such as improving the lives of their customers and making their community a better place. If you don’t believe in the mission of your company, you will have a hard time supporting it with your best efforts. DOWNLOAD THE REPORT 7. Above-average wages Of course, money can’t buy happiness, but not having enough leads to stress, disgruntlement and eventually your departure for greener pastures. The best workplace for your payroll career is one that recognizes your skills and compensates you fairly for it. Check out our Salary Guide for starting salaries in various payroll positions. Then don’t be afraid to negotiate your starting salary. The job market is healthy for payroll professionals, so you can afford to be selective about your next employer. Don’t settle for so-so when you can land the job - and workplace - of your choice. On the lookout for payroll manager or payroll clerk jobs? Keep reading.

Sales Recruitment Outlook for 2011

Sales Recruitment Outlook for 2011 Sales Recruitment Outlook for 2011 Sales Recruitment Outlook for 2011 With companies of all sizes expecting more out of their sales forces than ever before, 2011 looks to be a very challenging year for those looking to hire top sales people. Yes, the recession has left a long wake of unemployed sales workers about 1.5 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And the market for sales people will likely continue to closely track the broader US labor market. Sales unemployment has declined only very gradually, by about half a percentage point over the 12 months ending October 2010, to 9.1 percent, in the BLS household survey. But with many firms continuing to reduce headcount in other departments in order to beef up sales, competition for the best closers the only kind of hire many sales VPs will make these days is fierce. In response, many employers are sharpening their sales recruitmentefforts and reconsidering the harsh stance on employee compensation that has typified negotiations with candidates for the past couple of years. Hot Industries Are Hiring Sales Folks Fast Sales hiring varies widely across industry sectors, with the greatest activity in finance and tech, which have recovered more robustly than the overall economy. In October, Ive heard the top sales executives at two of my clients announce plans to grow their sales forces by 15 to 20 percent in 2011, says Mark Coleman managing director of Compensation Analytics. Colemans clients are primarily in technology and financial services. Some niche recruiters are finding that sales people with deep technical know-how are hard to come by. Weve got more work than we can handle, says Jordan Rayboy, president of Rayboy Insider Search, which specializes in recruiting sales and other professionals for the data storage industry. Were looking to hire recruiters on our own staff. One difficult dynamic has begun to ease: After hunkering down through the recession, some top sales people are now willing to consider a change of employers. In 2010 weve seen an exodus of good sales candidates who didnt want to make a move in 2008 or 2009, says Rayboy. Perhaps the toughest part for recruiters looking to engage experienced sales people is that their clients are only interested in sales sharks who do it all, from cold-calling to post-sales customer support. Until the economy turns and sales people can just be order takers, companies will be looking for hunters who can close deals, says Sara Peiker, director of recruiting business solutions at Manpower. Employers Get More Sophisticated with Sales Hiring In order to compete for top performers, recruiters have to focus every dimension of the hiring process on quality. Companies are a lot smarter today about how they hire, says Chuck Pappalardo, managing director of Trilogy Search in Burlingame, Calif. Organizations are tougher, more stringent, more democratic. Most of my clients have a very good staffing person with a bead on what their sales manager or VP is looking for. As social media recruitmenthas enabled hiring managers to learn of every candidate in their universe, recruiters have had to earn their keep by providing a suite of higher-level services.
